ARC Review: Furious Rush by S.C. Stephens

I was so excited when I found out that S.C. Stephens had a new book coming out. I am a huge fan of hers, and Furious Rush looked and sounded right up my alley. Unfortunately I have been struggling with this book from the very start and ended up having to throw in the towel. Right now this book just isn't working for me at all, and I couldn't finish it. Hopefully at some point I can give it another chance, since I have loved books from S.C. Stephens so much in the past.

As the daughter of a racing legend, Mackenzie Cox has a lot to prove. The last thing she needs is to deal with the sexy new driver that has been hired by her team's biggest rival. Hayden Hayes gets under her skin immediately, insinuating that she is a princess that has only been successful due to her daddy. But the more these two are around each other, the harder it becomes to stay away from one another. When the most important rule to their teams is to never have any contact with the enemy, Mackenzie and Hayden struggle with their growing attraction to one another and where the connection between them could possibly go.

I will admit that my biggest issue in this story was the characters. I didn't like Mackenzie. She seemed to have no backbone, letting those around her walk all over her and get away with whatever they felt like. All the while she had a total attitude towards Hayden and made a ton of assumptions about him. She came off as completely immature and I just couldn't warm up to her. Hayden was a jerk. Rude and judgmental, making assumptions of his own. He was sexist and awful, and I felt zero connection between these two. I also couldn't stand the secondary characters here. Mackenzie's friends were horrible. They were worse than she was and I got so tired of how idiotic they all were. Their actions were beyond frustrating, and the fact that Kenzie let them just do whatever really irritated me. Unfortunately this started immediately with the beginning of this book, and it just continued to get worse. If her friends weren't bad enough, her father was even worse. She wanted nothing more than to continue the family legacy and make him proud and he was absolutely awful to her. Why she felt like she needed to impress him after the way he treated her, I will never understand.

With all the issues I had with the characters, I had to put this book down and move on. There was just nothing to keep me wanting to finish this book, and it just wasn't working for me. I was so disappointed because I think S.C. Stephens is a great writer. For some reason this book just wasn't clicking for me, and that could just be for me personally. I tried walking away and coming back, but after several times or trying to get into Furious Rush I ended up setting it aside at a little after 30%. If this book sounds like something you might like, I encourage you to give it a go. Not every book is for every person, and this one might work better for you than it did for me. I did see that while this one does have an ending, it was pretty abrupt and is more HFN than HEA and it looks as though this might continue since things were left open for more. With the way I struggled here, I am not sure that I will be able to get into this one eventually or continue on if this does become a series.

ARC Review: Untamed by S.C. Stephens

I will admit that it took me awhile to get into this book and I was pretty worried when I first started reading Untamed. As much as I love the Thoughtless series by S.C. Stephens, I was having a tough time with Griffin at the start of this book. Thankfully I stuck with it and things got so much better. I will warn that this book isn't all happy times and there were some pretty emotional moments here. While this wasn't my favorite of the series, I did enjoy it and it was great to see all our favorite D-Bags and their women again.

When the D-Bags made it big, bassist Griffin Hancock knew that it was his destiny. He had been born to be a rockstar and it was only a matter of time before the world saw how awesome he was. Though Griffin is in the most famous band in the world and has a beautiful wife and family, the one thing he doesn't have is to be the star in the spotlight. Tired of living in Kellan Kyle's shadow, Griffin is determined to show the world that he is the real star. But when the guys refuse to let him take any of the spotlight, Griffin makes a shocking decision that changes everything. Though his wife Anna tries to stand by his side and support him no matter what, the more things continue to spiral out of control. Before long everything begins to slip through Griffin's fingertips and he might lose everything and everyone that he cares about.

I had such a hard time with Griffin at first here. He was over the top and cocky, almost to the point of me completely disliking him at times. While I felt for him and saw what it was like at times, there were others that he just alienated everyone around him as well as the reader. Griffin has always been different, and I love that about him. But I felt like he was almost made to be a complete character here at the beginning if that makes sense. Some of the things he said and did didn't ring true for me and it was sad to watch. I did understand how he was feeling though, and I was really mad at the other D-Bags because it felt like they didn't take his feelings seriously here. He was trying to tell them that he felt like he was the odd man out and was trying to find his place, and while his methods and ideas weren't the greatest, I felt like they should have handled it differently. They were mean about it and didn't seem to really care about him at all. My heart especially broke for him with how Matt treated him. I don't agree with everything that Griffin did when it came to Matt and Rachel, but I really felt like Matt was the most to blame for how quickly things soured with their relationship. All of these characters have so much pride and it was clear that no one wanted to be the one to apologize and grovel. While Griffin definitely had things to apologize for, I felt like he wasn't the only one that needed to and it really sucked that he was the only one that really did in the end.

I loved the fact that Griffin made such progress, and towards the end of the book I could not have loved his character more. He really turned his life around, and it was so good to see that he realized what was truly important. No matter what the outcome was with his career and future with the D-Bags, I was so glad that he knew without his wife and family nothing mattered. While I was glad that he figured that out, I will say that I wasn't completely happy with how things ended here. Griffin and the guys were okay with the direction things were headed for the future, but to me it was a little bittersweet. While things ended on a happy note, I didn't really care for the huge change that things took here. On the surface it seems like a win for everyone, but it also just felt wrong to me. As a fan of this series throughout the previous books, it didn't really sit right with me and unfortunately changed everything. So while I was happy with Griffin's growth and progress, I can't say that I was happy with where things ended up here overall. I think that fans will love seeing Griffin and the D-Bags here though, and if you are new to this series this could possibly be read as a standalone. I would really recommend reading these books in order though, as it really allows you to see just how far Griffin has come and everything that has happened to get to where they are here.

Audiobook Review: Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens, Narrated by Rebekkah Ross

Honestly I am a huge fan of Thoughtless and all things Kellan Kyle, so when I got the chance to listen to this on audiobook I couldn't wait! Though I know this series is one of those that evokes strong emotions out of anyone that reads/listens, I am definitely of the camp that loves it rather than hates it. I think that because of the content that people can't help but feel so strongly one way or the other, but for me I love every single word written by S.C. Stephens even when there were parts that were extremely hard to get through. I have to say though that listening to the audiobook just made me love this book that much more!

When Kiera moves across the country for her boyfriend Denny, she leaves everything that she knows behind. Ready to start their life together, she transfers to a new school knowing that leaving her family behind will be worth it. But when Denny's new internship takes him away from her for work, Kiera begins to feel lonely and confused in a strange place. Turning to their roommate Kellan Kyle, she finds a friendship she never expected. The longer Denny is away, the closer Kiera and Kellan grow. But then one night changes everything, forcing them to rethink everything that they thought they knew.

There are not enough words to say how much I love Kellan Kyle. Seriously he is one of my top book boyfriends ever! Kellan is sweet and sexy, thoughtful and funny. He is supportive and encouraging, and his love for Kiera is unconditional. Kellan is impossible not to fall in love with, and I think that he would literally cut out his own heart for Kiera. Kiera is admittedly hard to like at times. She can come off as whiny and indecisive, and I definitely didn't care for how she treated Kellan (or Denny for that matter!) at times. Yet there was something about her that made her still likable to me. She was clearly struggling with everything she thought she knew about her life, and was absolutely torn about her feelings for both Denny and Kellan. Denny was familiar and comfortable, and so sweet and lovable. But Kellan was new and exciting, and the passion between them was stronger that what she had ever felt with Denny. The growing connection between her and Kellan just made it that much more confusing for her, but it was clear to me that she really loved both guys just in different ways.

Overall, I really love this story and I really loved the narration here. I thought that Rebekkah Ross did a great job not only bringing these characters to life, but really embodying their personalities as well. She was clear and easy to understand, and I love that she varied her tone and voice for each character making them easy to distinguish. I also felt like she did a great job portraying Denny's character with the accent, which was a wonderful surprise that I hadn't expected. She really was fantastic to listen to, making a favorite story of mine like a whole new experience. One thing I hate about finishing a favorite book is that you only get that first read once. While it is always great to go back and reread, it isn't ever as magical as that first time. But listening to the audio version with a great narrator is like reading the book for the first time all over again, and Rebekkah Ross really nailed the performance here. I will definitely look for more audiobooks with Rebekkah Ross in the future, and I can't wait for more from S.C. Stephens. If you are new to the series, this is a great way to start! If you are a fan already, I highly recommend the audiobook version of this book if you haven't listened yet.

ARC Review: Thoughtful by S.C. Stephens

I think it is impossible to read any book with Kellan Kyle in it and not fall in love with him. I have loved him since the very start, so I was really excited when I found out that S.C. Stephens was giving us more of him. When I read Thoughtless, I always felt as though the one thing missing was Kellan's thoughts and feelings. I wanted his POV so badly, because I really felt like the story was incomplete without it. I have to say, I thought that this book was everything that I had been hoping for and more. I will tell you that if you are going into Thoughtful expecting an entirely new story you will be disappointed. Thoughtful is not a new story, but rather the same story told in a completely new way. This is Thoughtless as you have never seen it before, from Kellan's POV. While fans of the series might be on the fence about the same story rehashed, I honestly loved seeing the same story from Kellan's side this time around.

Kellan Kyle had a hard life growing up. He lost himself in his guitar and music. Now grown up, Kellan has his bandmates and an endless string of women willing to fill his time. But while he has always turned to sex to lose himself, he finds himself feeling empty and wanting more. When his childhood friend Denny asks for a place to stay with his girlfriend, Kellan can't wait to have his friend back around and looks forward to having company. He never expects to be so drawn to Denny's girlfriend Kiera though. As Kiera and Kellan grow closer the more they are around each other, the more Kellan starts to feel right for the first time ever. He knows that he should be staying far away from her, but he also knows that he will do whatever it takes not to lose her.

I have never been a Kiera hater. I know there are a lot of people out there who are, but I have never been one of them. I was aggravated and frustrated with her at times, but I always felt just how torn and confused she was. I think it is easy to judge from the outside and forget how young she was. She had only ever been with Denny and was experiencing so many new things that I felt like she really just didn't know how to deal at times. I always felt the connection between her and Kellan though, and as hard as it was to watch things at times I really felt like these two would make it work because they were meant to. I loved getting to see her from Kellan's POV though. I felt like we really got to know her better through Thoughtful. I know that might seem strange considering this was Kellan's POV and we had already been given hers, but I felt like we really got to see a whole new side of her that was only possible from someone else's perspective. Kellan was just as lovable as ever, and we had seen him be vulnerable before. But this time around I felt as if we got to see him completely bare. Everything that he had been through in his past as well as him fighting his feelings for Kiera really tore me apart. He had been hurt so many times, and it was so heartbreaking to see him still hurting. The depth of his feelings and emotions was something that is hard to put into words. I loved him so much more though because of it, and I really understood him and Kiera's relationship so much better after reading Thoughtful.

Overall, I really recommend reading this book if you are a fan of the series. I think that this book adds so much and that it really shines a whole new light on things. Kellan Kyle is impossible to not fall in love with, and Thoughtful gives readers more of him than ever before. S.C. Stephens did a great job of keeping events consistent with Thoughtless and although there wasn't a ton of new content, it really did feel as though a lot of it was completely different. We might have experienced this before, but through Kellan's eyes it was like experiencing it for the first time all over again. While I liked Thoughtless and getting to know the characters, I have to say that I loved Thoughtful. I really can't say enough why every one that has read this series should read this book. But trust me when I tell you that if you love Kellan Kyle, Thoughtful is a book that you will not want to miss. I am so glad that S.C. Stephens was able to give readers more of the story and more of Kellan, and I honestly cannot wait to get the next book in this series. While I have never been a huge Griff fan, I have to say I am definitely interested in seeing him in a different light. I will absolutely be reading more from S.C. Stephens in the future, and I am excited to see what she has in store for us next.
