ARC Review: Mr. Frost: Goes to Washington by Aimee James

Mr. Frost Goes to Washington is the first novelette in the William Frost Series by Aimee James. These novelettes are very short, only about twenty or thirty pages each. They start with Will just having graduated from Brown. He intends to take the summer off before starting philanthropic work. He is happily with his best friend and lover Katherine O'Doherty, and is convinced that she is the one. He proposes to her, but she isn't ready for marriage or the one. She leaves him broken hearted. The story then picks up five years later, and while Will has continued his philanthropic ways he has also been engaging in his other passion, women. We get to see what adventures Will has in Washington before heading to San Diego.

The main problem that I usually have with novellas/novelettes, is that they are so brief that we really don't get to know the characters well. This story being even shorter, I feel like we barely got to see much of Will, and Katherine wasn't seen beyond the very start when she turned him down when they were younger. Will seems to be a good guy that has intentions of making the world a better place. He is young and suffered not only the loss of Katherine and their future, but he then lost his parents just five years later. I liked that he is determined to keep doing good though, and seems to be committed to his causes. He seems to be fun and easy to get along with, and remarkably normal considering his wealth and prominence. I am intrigued by Katherine and Will's future though, and it will be interesting to see what happens for them both. With Will heading to San Diego next, they are bound to cross paths again.

Overall, this was a good start to this series and it left me wanting more. I am curious to see what Will's next adventure will be and to see what awaits him in San Diego. This novelette was hot and there were a few steamy scenes. I thought that Aimee James did a really great job writing them and they were the highlights of this book for me. Being so short though, those were the majority of this story so far. I am hoping that we will get a bit more of the characters in the next two installments, as I really feel like we don't know them that well yet. If you are looking for a short and sexy read, I would recommend giving this one a shot.

ARC Review: Let's Misbehave by Kate Perry

Let's Misbehave is the third book in the Summerhill series by Kate Perry. These books are standalones with interconnected characters. This is the first book of Perry's that I have read, but it definitely won't be my last. I enjoyed Let's Misbehave immensely, and I was really able to lost myself in the story. I finished this book really quickly because I couldn't put it down and had to see what would happen next. I can't wait to go back and read the previous books in this series, and I am really looking forward to seeing what else Kate Perry has in store for the Summerhills next.

Imogen Summerhill is trying to stay out of the spotlight and clean up her image after her ex leaked compromising photos and videos of the two of them. While her studio couldn't be happier, Imogen wants a part in a movie that requires her to keep her nose clean. Looking to be taken seriously, she attends a charity event to try and meet up with the director for the movie roll she wants. She ends up meeting Merrick Graham, also known as the Bad Boy of Politics. They are both instantly drawn to each other, and know that they should stay away from the other. Merrick is trying to get a safety act passed, and doesn't need the distraction or bad press. But the two of them find themselves unable to stay away. They decide to see each other in private, and stay out of the spotlight. But with both of them having such high profile careers and Imogen's studio determined that all press is good press, can they keep their growing feelings and relationship a secret for long?

I really liked Merrick. He was so much more than just the uptight politician he first seems like. He was a musician in a popular band before his sister died, but now he doesn't have anything to do with music. I liked that Imogen was able to get him to see that his sister wouldn't have wanted him to give it all up just because she was gone. He felt a lot of guilt, and it kept him from really being who he was so it was nice to see that Imogen was able to bring him back. He was sexy and had tattoos, but he was more than just a former rock star. He was committed to doing good for others, and trying to prevent horrible crimes from happening. There were a couple of times that I thought that Merrick was a bit quick to judge and made some assumptions, but he was pretty quick to move forward after talking to either Imogen or his friend Valerie. Imogen was easy to like and relate to despite her career. She was nice and approachable, and she saw the good in others even when they didn't always deserve it. I thought that she made a few bad decisions, and she should have been more honest with Merrick at times. There were a few things that she did that bothered me, and I couldn't figure out why she didn't just talk to Merrick about what was going on. I felt like a lot of the issues they had were simple errors in communication, and could have easily been solved if they just would have talked to each other more. But I thought that she was a really great match for Merrick and they fit together perfectly. I thought that Merrick and Imogen had a lot of chemistry and were pretty hot together. I really enjoyed their banter and their wit.

Overall, I really liked this book. At first I was worried that I wasn't going to be able to get into the story because it seemed like a lot was going on. But as I continued to read, I really liked how Kate Perry was able to weave several story lines into one book, and I liked that they were all connected giving this book a well rounded experience. I really enjoyed Merrick and Imogen, but I also really liked Holly's story as well. The Summerhill sisters were all really interesting also, and I loved that they were all so different and unique and yet they were all supportive of each other as a family should be. This book was really easy to get lost in, and I had a great time reading it. I would highly recommend this book to romance fans, and I look forward to reading more from Kate Perry in the future. I am really interested in Titania's story next, and can't wait to see what Kate Perry has in store for her!

Feature and Giveaway: Let's Misbehave by Kate Perry

Imogen Summerhill, box office darling, has never wanted to be in the spotlight less.

When racy photos—and video!—are leaked by her sleazy ex, her studio couldn't be happier. All press is good press, and this will only enhance the intrigue about her upcoming blockbuster. But how is Gigi supposed to be taken seriously as an actress with all this inappropriate buzz? She’s Cate Blanchett, not Kim Kardashian.

But then Gigi meets Merrick Graham, the Bad Boy of Politics. The last thing either of them wants is to be tainted by more scandal: he needs the support of the conservatives, and she wants to untarnish her image.

Only they can't resist each other—separately they're good, but in the bedroom they're even better. They can’t be seen together in public, but in private all’s fair game, and there’s plenty of room to misbehave...

ARC Review: Bird After Bird by Leslea Tash

I was really looking forward to reading this book after having read the blurb. It sounded like one that I would really be able to get into, and I really liked the look of the cover. The first chapter really grabbed my attention and I will admit that as I was reading it I was laughing through my tears. The letter that Wren's dad left her was both funny and heartbreaking. I figured that this one was going to be a home run after finishing the first chapter. Unfortunately this one fell apart for me and although there were things that I did really enjoy about this story this one just didn't work for me. I think that this one had a lot of promise and a great story somewhere inside of everything, but for me it just didn't live up to what I had expected after that first chapter.

Wren has been dealing with her father's estate after he died a year ago and returns home in order to list his house on the market. Her father's lawyer gives her a key to a safe deposit box and she finds their old bird watching book/journal along with a letter from him. She is now a successful businesswoman working in Chicago after having left her small hometown behind. She ends up meeting Laurence "Laurie" Byrd while back in her hometown and they hit it off. When Wren returns to Chicago, both her and Laurie are still thinking of each other. They decide to start seeing each other and even though they are far apart they think that it is worth working for. But soon, Wren's ambition and career goals are threatening to get in the way of their relationship. Laurie isn't ready to let her go, but with him suffering from his past as well things between them are more complicated than ever. Can they both move forward together, or will their pasts and futures be too far apart for them to make a relationship work?

I liked Laurie. He was sweet and thoughtful. I loved how artistic and positive he was. He always seemed to be such a good guy that was just looking for happiness in whatever life threw his way. I really liked that he would journal to get his feelings out and then he would leave them in the form of origami birds out in the world. It was such a unique and different idea that I have never seen or heard anything like before. I did think that Laurie seemed to develop really strong and intense feelings very fast though and that was a little bit too insta-love for my tastes. Especially considering that he had lost his fiance before and was still not over her death. It just seemed to be way too rushed for me. Wren was a character that I both liked and didn't. I loved that she had been so close to her father and that she had such a great relationship with her friends. I really liked her commitment to birding and her love of helping those in the birding community. I did think that she was a bit hard to really identify with though, and I hated that she was dating Troy for really no reason. She didn't like him and didn't really intend to use him to better her career, but yet she continued to date him even after meeting Laurie and it seemed like she was only with him because she couldn't actually have the conversation. I just didn't really like that and I thought that it was kind of crappy to do to not only Laurie but also to Troy even though I didn't like him. I also really didn't like that she made decisions without thinking about Laurie at all or even really talking to him. She said she loved him, but honestly I really didn't buy it. She never really thought about him or their future and didn't seem to take his feelings into consideration at all. She just did what she wanted or thought was best and seemed almost indifferent to him most of the time. I did like that she stood up for him to his mom and sister Jo though. I also thought that they did have some chemistry and that the foundation for a relationship was there. It just didn't ever really seem to develop in a real or believable way to me.

I also didn't like that this book focused so much on birding. It seemed like there was more detail and description on the birds and environment than on the characters, and I felt that it really distracted from the story being told. I honestly didn't care about the birds or birding at all, and I kept becoming distracted and wanting to skim large sections of the book because of it. I also thought that this book was all over the place. This book lacked smooth transitions and sometimes it lacked transitions all together. It would just pick up somewhere completely new and left me trying to figure out what I had missed or how we got to where we were from where the story had just been. I did think that Wren and Laurie were both characters that were capable of being liked and I would have really been interested in their story if it had seemed to actually develop, but it just didn't ever work for me and I felt that the story was too bogged down with the birding parts. I had been hoping for more of a love story, and this one just fell short of that for me. I think that there are a lot of people who will enjoy this story and the characters, and anyone who is a fan of birding will probably really enjoy this book. It just wasn't for me and wasn't what I had been expecting.
