Guest Post with Author Boone Brux and Giveaway

Today I would like to welcome to RFTC, author Boone Brux. Boone is celebrating the recent release of her book Kiss of the Betrayer and has stopped by to chat. Please give Boone a warm welcome.

As a multi-published and an award winning author, Boone's writing drips with experiences from real life. Addicted to anything that might make a good story, she weaves tales that range from dark fantasy to humorous romance. Settled in the icy regions of Alaska with the love of her life and twin daughters, it's not uncommon to find her tapping away on her iPad on a windy beach or the barren tundra. Be warned, anyone and every even is fodder for one of Boone's novels.

Places to find Boone:

Man Talk

Since I’ve been writing alpha heroes, I’ve had to sit back and assess how men actually speak. There are a lot of books out there espousing the differences between the sexes, but nothing really drove home this fact until I got in the middle of a texting conversation between my husband and one of his skeet shooting buddies.
We were in the car, on our way to dinner when my husband received a text from his friend, Bob. I picked up the phone and read him the text. Here’s how the conversation went.

Bob: “Do you reload?”

With my hands poised, ready for speedy texting, I asked, “Do you want me to text him your answer?”

Hubby: “Tell him yes.”

I punched in the single word and waited. Silence. I looked at him. “And?”

Hubby: “And what?”

Me: “Don’t you want to tell him what kind of shells you reload or ask if he reloads?”

Hubby: “No, if he wants to know he’ll ask.”

I pressed send and waited. A few seconds later Bob responded.

Bob: What kind of reloader do you have?”

This conversation was quickly turning into a study of communication habits between men.

Hubby: “The green one.”

Me: “The green one?” Doesn’t it have a serial number or a name like the Master Blaster—the last name in reloading?”

Hubby: “No, just tell him it’s the green one. He’ll know.”

I sent the vague text, ruminating that men hadn’t evolved that much since caveman days. But a few seconds Bob texted back.

Bob: “Good one.”

I waited for more but that was the end of their conversation. That’s when I realized how differently men and women communicate. If this conversation had been between me and my friend, Stacey, it would have gone something like this.

Stacey: Do you reload (send)

Me: “Sometimes, it depends on my mood. I found that reloading isn’t all that cost effective when I can get shells on sale at Sportsman Warehouse.” (send)

Now keep in mind, I’m texting. Stacey and I have entire conversations complete with correct punctuation and grammar about incredibly deep subjects.

Stacey: “I’m thinking about starting but I don’t know which reloader to buy.” (send)

Me: “Well, I have the green one. I think it’s a CD-915 or CD-917. I can’t remember. Hold on and I’ll check.”

Me: “I was right the first time. It’s a CD-915. It’s a really pretty green.” (send)

Stacey: “I love green. It’s my favorite color.” (send)

Me: “Yeah, it’s nice. I wish they made one in orange.” (send)

Stacey: “Oh, that would be awesome. We could invent one.” (send)

Me: “Yeah, and it should make chocolate bullets.” (send)

Stacey: “LOL, we’d make a fortune. And we could wrap them in pretty gold foil with green ribbons.” (send)

Me: “Love it! We could open our own chocolate ammo store or mail-order business.” (send)

I’m going to stop the conversation there because it would go on for hours. You get the point. Realizing that men communicate so differently, I went back and checked the alpha males in my Bringer and the Bane series. I’ll admit, they were chatting away like a bunch of angry hens—even the villains. Here’s an example pre-editing.

Villian: “I can’t wait to see you suffer. When he takes you, I want to be there. I want to see your fear and hear you—”

Blah, blah, blah, for the love of God, we get it. I cut all the dialogue for my heroes by half. In Kiss of the Betrayer, Luc is a little chattier than Rhys was in Shield of Fire, but that’s because he’s a ladies’ man. Still, I had to rein myself in from giving him dialogue filled with emotions.

Before I leave, I’d like to share another conversation I had with my husband, who could and one day will be a character in one of my books.

Me: “Hey honey, how was your day?”

Hubby: *Shoulder shrug*

Me: “What’s wrong?”

Hubby: “I had a bad day.”

Me: “Do you want to talk about it?”

Hubby: “I just did.”

Yeah, that was an actual conversation.

Leave a comment and tell me about your favorite conversation with the opposite sex for a chance to win a copy of my new book, Kiss of the Betrayer. It’s full of hot alpha males. You’re welcome.

Now, I want to wish you a joyous, chocolaty holiday, wrapped in pretty gold paper and tied up with sparkly green bow.

In a deadly mission, Jade and Luc embark on a journey into the Shadow World. As they attempt the impossible, ignoring the attraction growing between them becomes harder to deny. 2. I had a conversation with my husband a while back about a jacket he wanted. We had gone shopping and must have looked at ten different ones. When we got back home I asked him which one he liked better and wanted. He said the one he looked at. That was it. I'm thinking to myself that I'm not a mind reader. I have to say, that I got the correct jacket. It was the one he stopped to look at not any of the ones I had shown him.

  3. My favorite conversation was with my brother practicing his sales pitch. When he was in college, he sold china through bridal shops. He would prompt me what to ask. I said no one would ask such stupid questions. Then he got mad and I started laughing. I still have the 'ring' he gave me for my time.

  7. I don't have a conversation as informative or fun as yours. I can't really remember any type of conversation that would be favorite. I can say that I don't think he communicates with other men the way your husband does. He uses complete sentences. I'd really love to win a copy of Kiss of the Betrayer. Great cover, I could lick it forever.

  12. haha oh gosh I wish I could remember the conversations with my husband. He doesn't seem to understand why I read romance novels so those are always amusing, he tends to tease me about them <3 but I can totally picture my husband saying the same thing :)

  13. I really don't have a favorite conversation mostly it just happens every day. My husband is very A D D so any lengthy conversation is interesting. We have multiple subjects and many unfinished questions. Usually I end up saying "ok ADD boy pay attention and at least answer my question".

  14. I don't really tend to remember specific conversation. The only one that comes to mind is when one of our male friends was making disparaging remarks about the "illogical" way women think. I gave him a look, and he said he wasn't talking about me because I think logically, like a man! It was a nice compliment to me (at least I thought so), but I didn't agree with him about women generally being illogical. BTW, my husband is generally a lot more communicative than yours!

  18. Most favorite conversation so far was about what women want that some stranger at a party brought up...supposedly it's natural that women need men to tell us what to do and women love catering (cooking and cleaning, etc) to men. By the end of that little talk, I don't think he was going to make that a conversation topic again!...just when you think we've all moved forward *lol*

  21. The conversations I get a kick out of are the ones we have about something we spoke of a few days before and he swears up and down we didn't discuss it. Then when the roles are reversed he tells me I need to have a brain scan because I can't remember anything. I just sigh and roll my eyes.

  22. I think any conversation with the opposite sex is interesting. You know what they say about the old Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus thing. Between my husband and my 20 year old son, it's always interesting! Thanks for the awesome giveaway!
