Guest Post with Author Rebecca Rogers Maher and Giveaway

Today we would like to welcome back to the blog author, Rebecca Rogers Maher. Rebecca is celebrating the release of Hurricane Lily and has stopped by to chat. Please give Rebecca a warm welcome.

Rebecca Rogers Maher writes contemporary romance novels about real women. She’s a Vassar graduate, a former community organizer and Brooklyn public school teacher, and a mother to two insanely sweet boys. Rebecca likes bold stories with strong, flawed heroines. She believes messed-up ladies deserve happy endings too, as well as lots of hot sex with genuinely kind men. She lives in Brooklyn, New York with her hot, kind husband and their children.

Why I Made a Soundtrack to Hurricane Lily

I make a playlist for every book I write. At this point, I’m not sure I could even complete a book without the support of a soundtrack. It’s that integral to the process for me. Sometimes, a particular song will get me thinking about a problem, and that problem will become the central conflict of a story. Other times, the story’s developing conflict will put a song in my head that I can’t shake, or will make me listen more closely than usual to a particular song on my iPod, and hear it differently.

When I wrote Hurricane Lily, I was plagued with music. Certain songs just followed me around and would not let go. They were songs about passion, miscommunication, desire, loneliness, greed, anxiety, loss, human connection, recovery and sex, and one by one they helped me refine and sharpen a story that was about all of these things. I finished writing Hurricane Lily and finished compiling the soundtrack on the same day, and that’s no accident. These songs, for me, tease out and help develop the subtext of Hurricane Lily, and add to the experience of reading it.

The Hurricane Lily soundtrack is available for download here at iTunes. Above and beyond the book, these are great songs by fantastic artists, so please check them out.

I’d love to give the soundtrack away as a gift to one random commenter, so please chime in below. What is one song that would be on the soundtrack of your life, and why? Do you like the idea of book soundtracks? Do you think it adds to the story?

Here’s the Hurricane Lily playlist, along with lyrics that helped develop the book. Enjoy!

Download it today!

1. Ship of Fools, World Party -- “You will pay tomorrow.”
2. The Rifle’s Spiral, The Shins -- “You were always to be a dagger floating straight to their heart.”
3. Telling Ghosts, Puscifer -- “The more you take, the more you need.”
4. Girl and the Ghost, Carina Round -- “What’s that in your mouth? The curse or the key?”
5. Invisible Ink, Aimee Mann -- “Maybe I wrote in invisible ink.”
6. Come Undone, Duran Duran -- “Who do you need? Who do you love?”
7. I’m on Fire (Live), Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band -- “Sometimes it’s like someone took a knife, baby, edgy and dull, and cut a six-inch valley through the middle of my skull.”
8. The Lightning Strike (What If This Storm Ends?), Snow Patrol -- “I don’t want to run. Just overwhelm me.”
9. Lay Down Your Pain, Toni Childs -- “Come on and lay down, lay down.”
10. We’re In this Together, Nine Inch Nails -- “Until the very end of me. Until the very end of you.”

Lily Sawyer flees her controlling, wealthy family in New York City for a solitary existence on Cape Cod. Three months later, a mounting anxiety binds her to the house she can no longer leave.

With hurricane season approaching, Lily hires Cliff Buckley—an angry carpenter with an immediate disgust for his elitist employer—to storm-proof her house.

Cliff soon discovers they have more in common than he thinks, as well as a raging spark between them could either destroy—or save—everything they care about. The question is, can either of them survive Hurricane Lily?

    1. It would be fun to let your iPod play ten random songs in a row and then write a story around them. Maybe I'll do that one day!

    1. That's such a fun song! I can't listen to music and read (or write) at the same time either. I listen later, when I'm thinking about the story.

  11. Ha! Probably "Last Friday Night" by Katy Perry. That's not because I like Katy Perry, I don't really. But that song describes a crazy night my best friend and I had two years ago. We think of that night whenever we hear this song ; )

  12. I love how certain songs can take you right back to a place like that. Katy Perry's "Firework," actually, will always remind me of my kids two summers ago. They sang it nonstop! She's catchy like that. :)
