Guest Post with Author Rebecca York and Giveaway

Meet Rebecca York, author of Bad Nights.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rebecca York’s writing has been compared to Dick Francis, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Maggie Shayne. Her books have been translated into twenty-two languages and optioned for film. She lives in Maryland, near Washington, D.C., which is often the setting of her romantic suspense novels. Rebecca’s next romantic suspense novel from Sourcebooks Casablanca, Betrayed, will be in stores in July 2014.

I’ve set up a situation in Bad Nights with a hero and heroine who would never have met under ordinary circumstances because they are from two different worlds. Jack Brandt is an ex-Navy SEAL, and Morgan Rains is a college professor.

As the book opens, widow Morgan has gone to her isolated vacation cabin to pack up her husband’s belongings. When she hears something outside, she wonders if someone’s out to take advantage of a woman alone. Instead she finds Jack Brandt staggering through the woods, naked and badly beaten. He’s been on an undercover assignment, infiltrating a homegrown militia getting ready to attack the nation’s capital. When the militia leader discovers Jack’s an undercover agent, they torture him, trying to get him to say who he’s working for and why. Jack manages to escape, but he’s barely functional. When the bad guys track him to Morgan’s house, they try to kill both him and Morgan. Their only recourse is to escape into the Blue Ridge wilderness where Jack’s training helps save their lives.

Jack is exactly the kind of wounded hero I love to write, a man damaged by the circumstances of his life. He came back from Afghanistan devastated by the loss of the other men in his squad and suffering from survivor’s guilt. Because he had a reckless disregard for his own safety, he took the dangerous undercover assignment. Although Jack thinks he has nothing to live for, he’s damned if he’s going to let the bad guys get any information from him.

Morgan is also in a bad place. A year and a half ago, her husband, the love of her life, was shot dead by a burglar. She’s been drifting through her days, feeling only half alive—until she meets Jack Brandt, a man so different from her husband that she can’t imagine a relationship with him. In fact, as she watches him cold-bloodedly kill one of the militiamen, she wonders if he’s a psychopath.

But as they flee from the militia and get to know each other, a bond forms between them. They begin to trust and admire each other, and the relationship blossoms into something neither one of them was looking for—or expected. Morgan finds an inner strength she didn’t know she possessed. At the same time, she knows she’s falling for Jack, but is he too closed up to accept what she’s offering?

I love writing stories where only the love of a good woman is going to save a man who thought himself beyond salvation. The combination of strength, determination and vulnerability in Jack is what draws me to him. I also like Morgan’s strength and resourcefulness. But what I hope readers will respond to is her ability to open herself to possibilities she never thought existed.

You Only Get a Second Chance...

Private operative and former Navy SEAL Jack Brandt barely escaped a disastrous undercover assignment, thanks to the most intriguing woman he's ever met. When his enemies track him to her doorstep, he'll do anything to protect Morgan from the danger closing in on them both...

If You Stay Alive...

Since her husband's death, Morgan Rains has only been going through the motions. She didn't think anything could shock her—until she finds a gorgeous man stumbling naked and injured through the woods behind her house. He's mysterious, intimidating—and undeniably compelling.

Thrown together into a pressure cooker of danger and intrigue, Jack and Morgan are finding in each other a reason to live—if they can survive.
