Fragments of Ash is the 7th story in Katy Regnery’s Modern Fairytale series, and while I did enjoy it, it wasn’t my favorite of the series. This book is based on Cinderella, an I loved that the wicked stepmother and sisters and the fairy godmother were instead men here in this book. I always love that Katy re-imagines these stories that we are all familiar with and makes them her own, and that was definitely the case here.
Ashley Ellis was the daughter of the famous model Tig, though everyone but a few people thought that she was actually her younger sister. So when her mom dies mysteriously when Ash is 18, she had no idea the plans her stepfather had for her. With the help of her godfather Gus, Ash is able to escape and goes into hiding. But with her stepfather and his sons as well as henchmen determined to hunt her down, will she be able to hide forever before he manages to get her back?
Like I said before, I liked this one but didn’t love it like the rest of the series. I think part of that was that this one was a bit slower and tended to focus more on Ash and her journey rather than the love story also happening here. The romance almost felt as though it was a minor part of this story, and I never felt as invested in the relationship as I would have like. While I liked Ash, there were things about her that were hard for me to connect to. Same thing for Julian. I liked him after he got over himself and the way he treated Ash at first. These two had chemistry and a growing connection, but I just wanted more.
Overall, this one was good and I did like it. I just wish that I felt more here, which is never usually a problem with this series. It was still good and well worth the read, it just didn’t pack quite the same punch as what I am used to for this series. Julian and Ash were a couple that I felt did belong together and they were good for one another, I just didn’t feel as emotionally invested in them as I normally do with the couples from this series. I still highly recommend this series to romance readers as no one does fairytale stories like Katy does. I am really looking forward to Swan Song and the continuation of this series.
