ARC Review: Night Storm by Tracey Devlyn
I had no idea what to expect when I began reading this novel. All I knew was that it involved a potential murder-mystery scenario, a thief-taker named Cameron Adair, and a female Apothecary-surgeon known as Dr. Charlotte Fielding. I was intrigued from the beginning simply because a woman apothecary was unheard of during the time in which the book was set, and I loved the author’s ability to bring this character to life. Charlotte is strong, intelligent, and stubborn. She is a true lover and fighter; any reader will adore this heroine. Our hero, however, is complicated, tough, quick-witted, and sexy. Both characters had me from the beginning.
The story centers upon Charlotte and Cameron who have come into each other’s lives many years after a personalfallout between them. Cameron has become a thief-taker, a man whom uses wit and strength to find stolen artifacts with ancient, but pertinent history. Charlotte, however, has become a renowned apothecary-surgeon, running her father’s business as her own after her mother’s death and her father’s absence. Cameron and Charlotte spent many years loving and hating one another because of their inabilities to speak truths and not let fear rule them as young adults. Now, unforeseen circumstances have brought them back together.
Cameron appears bloody and beaten, and in need of medical help while Charlotte is currently dealing with her own issues. She has Felix and Piper to worry about; Piper her protégé, and Felix, Piper’s brother to whom Charlotte relies on for extra help around the shop (deliveries, for instance). These two had a great rapport with the main character and the author made their fondness for one another clear. I thought Piper was delightful, sharp, and sweet; while Felix, despite his more aloof nature, was fun and honest. The familial sense of the three made me smile, and I loved Charlotte more for taking on a motherly role with them out of compassion for a family going through a tough time.
What I did not expect, however, was how well the story webbed together each character so flawlessly and uniquely. Felix, Piper, and of course Charlotte become involved unwillingly in a criminal setting after discovering a horrific murder. Then, Cameron becomes the detective of sorts, because the man whom owns the theatre where the murder occurred wants the culprit found (and Cameron as a thief-taker can find anything). This, of course, puts him and Charlotte in each other’s lives further and soon they are hiding secrets, feelings, and ideas while also searching for a murderer. I was enthralled in this story from the beginning, and the chemistry between these two was simply amazing. Both were walking a fine line of desire and need, while also experiencing danger at every turn. I loved it!
I also have to mention Jules and Vaughn because they both were equally appealing. Jules as Cameron’s closest friend, confidante, and partner in crime was just so much fun. He made me laugh at his wry sense of humor and he was also cocky in a way that was just the right amount. Vaughn, on the other hand, as Cameron’s associate was a mysterious character which only added to my interest in him (add in the good looks and I am chomping at the bit for more). There was also Trigger, a boy on the streets living as a pickpocket, who was saved by Cameron and soon became almost like a son who is trustworthy as well as loyal. Of course, Lachlan (the nephew of Dr. Buchanan, Charlotte’s mentor) certainly cannot be forgotten either. In fact, Lachlan was easily my favorite secondary character. The Scot had sex appeal, appeared sly in his humor, and was also considerate. Honestly, I am hoping to see him find his lass in another story down the road!
Ultimately, there is absolutely no shortage of wonderful characters in this book. Even better, I could not have imagined a better way to connect the characters together based upon their chosen professions. There is nothing but perfect comradery, rapport, and utilization of each character’s trades to bring the story and each individual together. I have been thoroughly impressed with Tracey’s work because she created a wonderful world that I became immersed in. Furthermore, because Cameron and Charlotte work so well together, there is no way I could not be more excited for another adventure full of mystery and danger! Thank you for the ride, Mrs. Devlyn!

ARC Review: Latymer by Tracey Devlyn
In Latymer Tracey Devlyn offers an exciting little novella full of intrigue. In the previous three books in the Nexus series we met a mysterious lord gone bad, William Townsend, Lord Latymer. Previously a friend of the Nexus leader, Lord Somerton, Latymer has betrayed the spy connections of both England and France. Now a doubly wanted man he has just a few hours to get himself and his nine-year-old son on a ship sailing to America. Thus begins a relentless journey of danger suspense before Latymer’s story is resolved. Hold onto your hats; it’s a very bumpy ride.
Tracey Devlyn took on a daunting task with this story. Seldom do you ever see a villain become the main character of a book. This villain is seeking some form of redemption for the poor choices he has made. Does he achieve that redemption? Maybe. The readers will have to decide. Latymer is not noble. He has sacrificed his honor for reasons that were clearly flawed. But he does love his son and that is his driving force. It is probably necessary to read at least some of the previous Nexus books in order to understand what Latymer has done and how his actions have affected the other characters in the Nexus-related network. This novella serves to tie up a number of loose ends.
Devlyn employs an unusual technique rarely seen in historical romances -- I would call it time-stamping. Because the story takes place in a very tight timeframe each chapter begins with the time of day (or night). This was very helpful in tracking the sense of urgency in the story. Another unusual technique was that the story was told from three different point of view: Latymer, his son Giles and Mac O’Donnell, who is seeking revenge for Latymer killing his brother. Many things happen in this short book: characters reach deeper levels of insight, a romance develops and a huge problem is solved. I am not a big suspense reader, but I found this book to be an intensive, wild ride. I liked that all of the characters were multi-dimensional and realistic. There were hard choices to be made and serious consequences to be dealt with. It was a very fast read and I enjoyed it. I will definitely be looking forward to the next Nexus book.

ARC Review: A Lady’s Secret Weapon by Tracey Devlyn
Tracey Devlyn states that she writes “historical romantic thrillers” and I think that is an apt description. A Lady’s Secret Weapon, the third book in her Nexus spy series, has spills and thrills aplenty. The Nexus spy network is a very secret government agency whose mission is to keep Napoleon out of England. This scenario offers many opportunities for stealth, deception, even romance. Devlyn’s writing skills are more than capable and, paired with this exciting plot line, we have the recipe for a very enjoyable book.
Ethan deBeau is an excellent spy. He has spent years rising to the top of his game, never letting his personal feelings about killing or seduction prevent him from reaching his goals. He is somewhat annoyed to have been given a seemingly easy assignment to kidnap a young boy. This easy chore becomes complicated by the interference of the mysterious Sydney Hunt. Ethan quickly realizes that there is more to Sydney than what she shows and he feels an immediate attraction to her. Sydney runs the Hunt employment agency, but also does business under another name. Why? It soon becomes clear that their respective missions are intertwined in some significant ways. Both Ethan and Sydney have information about each other, but are too suspicious to trust the other one. Is there time in their espionage-filled world for them to find each other?
I enjoyed A Lady’s Secret Weapon very much. I have not read the previous two books in the series, but I would like to find the time. I know it would enhance my appreciation for this one. I am not so much of a thriller reader so I would have liked a little more romance or perhaps a faster moving romance, but this is not to say that the romance wasn’t satisfying. I just prefer a bit more of a relationship-driven story and this one was more focused on the intricate plot. This nothing more than personal preference because it was a very good book. Those that like action and intrigue will definitely enjoy this series. On the whole, I liked the book very much and I’m glad to have read it.

ARC Review: A Lady's Revenge by Tracey Devlyn
I will be honest, I'm having the hardest time trying to formulate what I want to say about this book. It was very good and definitely not what I was expecting. This story is not for the faint of heart. It definitely isn't a light read, but a dark and intense tale. Watching Cora try to overcome everything that has happened to her was at times difficult, but I was so transfixed with the story I just kept turning the pages wanting more. More Cora, more Guy. Just what was going to happen with them and would Cora ever recover from everything and would she let Guy in.
When Cora was just ten years old, both of her parents were murdered. She has spent the last thirteen years thinking of a way to get revenge on the French man that murdered them. During the last three years she has been in France working as a spy seducing secrets from them. When her latest mission goes awry, she is captured and tortured by the man she believes to be behind the death of her parents. After weeks of torture she is saved by her old childhood friend Guy.
Guy has been sent to France to retrieve the spy Raven. Imagine his surprise when the woman he is sent to retrieve turns out to be the sister of his best friend. Guy can't believe his eyes and knows he has to do everything he can to save Cora. Once he frees Cora they escape back to England only to find out that her captor is on the loose and most likely after Cora.
Throughout the story Guy is constantly looking out for Cora and doing everything he can to keep her safe. Guy is everything I love in a hero. He's strong, intelligent and willing to do anything to save the woman he loves, and that woman is Cora deBeau. He puts himself on the line more than once and he is willing to do anything to help Cora. He knows she's scarred and wounded from her ordeal and he is willing to wait for her.
If I were ever put in Cora's situation I would definitely falter and hide myself in a corner and cry, but not Cora. Cora is constantly fighting for herself and her loved ones. She will do whatever it takes to keep them safe and I truly find her commendable. Watching Cora overcome everything and eventually find her way into Guy's arms was great to see. They both had such strong chemistry and the sparks between them literally jumped off the page.
After finishing this story I can't wait to see what's next from Tracey Devlyn. If all her books are as good as this one I know she will quickly become one of my favorites. This book is a must read.
