My Favorite Book Couple with Lorraine Heath

New York Times bestselling author Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases for a publicist, articles, and computer code, but something was always missing. In 1990, she read a romance novel and became not only hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She's been writing about them ever since.

Places to find Lorraine:

The couple in LaVyrle Spencer’s MORNING GLORY has to be my favorite couple of all time because they made me fall in love with the romance genre. They’re both wounded, been outsiders or outcasts their entire lives. She had found acceptance with her first husband, Glendon, but when he died she again found herself an outcast.

The top 10 reasons I loved this couple:

1. Will is recently released from prison for murder, down on his luck and just looking for a place to be accepted.

2. Elly is that crazy widow Dinsmore who puts an ad in the paper for a husband.

3. Will is shy, cautious.

4. Elly has no airs about her; she’s practical, down-to-earth.

5. They’re both afraid to believe in love, to acknowledge that what they feel is love.

6. Their love develops slowly, subtlety.

7. They give each other confidence and strength to face their fears.

8. They respect each other.

9. They bring out the best in each other.

10. Theirs is a love that will last through the hard times, that will last forever.

I love the slow, simmering build to love. I love the passion between Will and Elly. I loved the story of this couple realizing they deserved love and happiness.

In town, they called her “Crazy Widow Dinsmore.” But Elly was no stranger to their ridicule—she had been an outsider all her life, growing up in a darkened old house under the strict eye of her eccentric grandparents. Now she as all alone, with two little boys to raise, and a third child on the way.

Will Parker drifted into Whitney, GA, one lazy summer afternoon, hoping to put his lonely past behind him. He yearned for the tenderness he had never know, the home he’d never had. All he needed was for someone to give him a chance.

Then he saw her classified ad: WANTED—A HUSBAND.

When he stepped across Elly Dinsmore’s cluttered yard, Will knew he had come home at last.

They are England’s most eligible bachelors, with the most scandalous reputations. But for the right woman, even an unrepentant rogue may mend his ways…

Lady Grace Mabry’s ample inheritance has made it impossible for her to tell whether a suitor is in love with her—or enamored of her riches. Who better to distinguish beau from blackguard than her notorious childhood friend, the Duke of Lovingdon?

With no interest in marriage, Lovingdon has long lived only for pleasure. He sees little harm in helping Grace find a proper match. After all, he’s familiar with all the ploys a scoundrel uses to gain a woman’s favor. He simply has to teach the lovely innocent how to distinguish honest emotions from false ones. How better than by demonstrating his wicked ways. But as lessons lead to torrid passion and Grace becomes ensnared in another man’s marriage plot, Lovingdon must wage a desperate gamble: Open his heart fully—or risk losing the woman he adores…

  5. Oh wonderful Lavyrle Spencer! I loved Morning Glory too, Lorraine, but failed to keep books "back in the day" so don't have any of hers on my keeper shelf. This is a wonderful couple story to give away. I love your stories equally well, Lorraine, and the only ones I don't have (yet) are the Texas or western romances you wrote. I intend to shop for those soon! jdh2690@gmail.com

  7. Your book sounds really good, Lorraine. Is it part of a series?

It was a sad day for me when LaVyrle Spencer retired. I liked Morning Glory, but my favorites by her were The Endearment and A Promise To Cherish.
