Interview with Author Lia Riley and Giveaway

Meet Lia Riley author of With Every Breath

Lia Riley writes offbeat New Adult and Contemporary Adult romance. After studying at the University of Montana-Missoula, she scoured the world armed only with a backpack, overconfidence and a terrible sense of direction. She counts shooting vodka with a Ukranian mechanic in Antarctica, sipping yerba mate with gauchos in Chile and swilling XXXX with stationhands in Outback Australia among her accomplishments.

A British literature fanatic at heart, Lia considers Mr. Darcy and Edward Rochester as her fictional boyfriends. Her very patient husband doesn't mind. Much. When not torturing heroes (because c'mon, who doesn't love a good tortured hero?), Lia herds unruly chickens, camps, beach combs, daydreams about future books, wades through a mile-high TBR pile and schemes yet another trip. Right now, Icelandic hot springs and Scottish castles sound mighty fine.

She and her family live mostly in Northern California.

First off, can you tell us a bit about you?
If I had to describe myself in three words it would be “Look, a balloon!” I’m a highly distractible nail biter (never have kicked the habit) out to disprove the theory that Virgos are organized. When not writing, I’m binge-watching shows on Netflix (Hart of Dixie, Orange is the New Black, Vikings, you name it), herding three kids, and reading.

Did you always want to be a writer?
Yes. Well, no. My five-year-old “About Me” report says “I want to be married” when describing my life ambition. I think I decided to be a writer at around six.

What kind of writer are you? Panster or Plotter?
I’m a panster who wishes that I could be a well-organized, methodical plotter.

Where do your ideas come from?
Everywhere. Plot bunnies hide in so many places: a news article, an image on Pinterest, a bit of overheard conversation.

A la Twitter style, can you describe your book (or series) in 140 characters or less.
A journalist heads to the ends of the earth for a story and takes a walk on the wild side with a surly Scottish mountaineer.

What are some of your favorite kinds of stories to read?
Honestly, it’s about voice to me. I love to read in any genre outside of horror. All I want is a captivating story that’s well told.

Do you have a favorite book and if so what is it?
My all-time favorite book is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte (Mr. Rochester 4eva). My favorite reads in 2015 were Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty and What I Did for a Duke by Julie Ann Long.

What are the scenes that are the hardest for you to write? Why?
The openings. I pants and so it’s hard for me to get that first interaction down right away because I don’t know anything about my hero or heroine yet. When you read my openings they are generally my sixth or seventh attempt.

If you could have dinner with any three authors, who would you choose and why?
Jane Austen (because you know she’d be super sarcastic and witty), Charlotte Bronte because she’d make deliberative and meaningful conversation, and David Sedaris because he cracks me up.

Last question, are you working on anything right now?
Yes! I’m working a fun new contemporary romance series set in a eccentric Southern small town.

In With Every Breath, my hero, Rhys McAskill brings “Heart of Darkness” with him on an extended hike. Who is your favorite book boyfriend and what is a novel he’d have on his shelf?

BREATHE DEEP . . . AND JUMP IN

At the ends of the earth, Patagonia is a land where ambition trumps reason and the savage summit of La Aguja lures the most determined climbers. It's also the last spot a "play-it-safe girl" like Auden Woods expects to find herself. But she'll lace up her brand-new hiking boots and do whatever it takes to secure a dream job at an adventure magazine . . . even if it kills her. And it just might. When disaster strikes, her only chance at survival comes in the form of the surliest, sexiest mountaineer ever to come out of Scotland.

After a climbing accident cost him his brother, professional mountaineer Rhys MacAskill is at the end of his rope. Redemption is not in his future. That is, until a terrifying storm blows a budding journalist into his tent and it's up to him to make sure they both survive until morning. Despite the demons weighing on him, Rhys can't resist the temptation of the charming American and one wild night just isn't enough.

Auden and Rhys soon learn there are no shortcuts as they navigate their way between life, death, and atonement, and discover something they never expected—love.
