Audiobook Review: Marked by Midnight by Lara Adrian, Narrated by Hillary Huber

“Marked by Midnight” is the 11.5 of the Midnight Breed series. For me, this is my first experience with Lara Adrian. She is one of those authors that I always mean to read so when the opportunity to review her novella came up I was excited. Although I enjoy paranormal it’s not a genre I hear or read frequently. I’m happy to say that this was a great introduction to both Adrian and to her Midnight Breed series. 

First, yes this is a novella but Adrian quickly established tension between the two lead characters: Mathias and Nova. Two, she presents the eerie scene of a murder out on the hunt for Nova. Three she was able to establish a connection between me and the secondary character even if only briefly. 

Mathias Roman is a vampire warrior Nova is a breed mate and she is able to see the end of people’s lives. Nova leads a quiet life as a tattoo artist. When the dead body of a man with scarab tattoo. Nova is quickly involved and her life quickly becomes threatened. Because Nova and Mathias are still strangers, there is room for misunderstanding and a lack of trust. Personally, I liked Nova and Mathias. Nova is a type of rebel but she is all heart and incredibly loyal to those she loves. Nova has had a tough life but she has started a little circle of people she loves. When one of them suffers protecting her she runs and takes her adoptive-type brother with her. Mathias feels hurt because she fled before coming to him. Mathias is a tough vampire but he realizes that Nova is one of a kind and he is not ready to lose her. Neither to the murder nor to their own distrust.

The novella was, yes short-it is a novella, but it is very good. I was instantly interested in the characters and the love story between Mathias and Nova. Also, I was curious to see how the story would unfold. I definitely plan to read or hear more by Adrian and I am very interested in the series. Hillary Huber was a great narrator. She really added to the tension and the emotions behind the story. “Marked by Midnight” is a compact novella of chemistry, suspense, back stabbing and conflict.

ARC Review: For 100 Days by Lara Adrian

I should have really loved this book but I didn't. I'm a fan of the Cinderella story and I love brooding bossy alpha males. I really thought this book would be a hit for me but something went wrong with the characters. No matter how hard I tried, I could not get into Avery and Nick. Avery is a struggling artist trying to make her way in the big city. There is some issue which is alluded to with her Mother in which her Mother is locked up for killing her Stepfather. Avery is determined to make a better life for herself away from whatever happened in the past. Nick is an arrogant, rude billionaire who knows exactly what he wants and "reaches for it." I didn't just make that up, it's like his motto that he repeats in the book 'when I see something I want, I reach for it.' (Awk-ward).

Avery meets Nick at a point when she is damn near homeless and has lost her spot at a local gallery where her art was being displayed because the owner decided the work wasn't good enough. There is instant attraction between Avery and Nick. I can deal with instant attraction but what confused me was the instant depth of Avery's understanding of Nick. There is a scene where Avery looks at Nick and just based on his facial expression she intuits that he is covering some deep down hurt which she feels compelled to uncover. I was really confused about how Avery knew anything about Nick based on that one look. I was even more confused when Avery started feeling some deep connection to Nick based on their shared past suffering....that she guessed based on his facial expression.

Avery and Nick wind up sleeping together pretty early on. Again, I have no problem with things moving along at a fast pace but things got kind of silly afterwards. The day after sleeping together Avery is locking herself in a closet at work and having phone sex with Nick, after which she does not hear from him for a week. During the week break, Avery learns that Nick owned the gallery where her art hung before he decided she wasn't good enough. I thought this was going to be some kind of a coincidence but it wasn't. It turned out Nick knew exactly who Avery was BEFORE he slept with her. When she confronted him about her identity, he admits that yes he knew who she was and yes he thought her art wasn't good enough to be displayed so what's the big deal? Avery is determined to be angry but it last all of two seconds before she can't resist him anymore and the issue of her being a professional failure is dropped. I just didn't get Avery at all. I didn't get why she felt the way she did about Nick and I couldn't understand their relationship.

When I was reading this book I felt like the author had all the pieces of a really good story but they were not well assembled.

ARC Review: Cut and Run by Lara Adrian and Tina Folsom

In this intense, suspenseful romance with a bit of supernatural intrigue at its core, I am delighted to say that Lara and Tina both provided us as readers with a superb new series! The first installment novella titled Cut, was very well-written with main characters Ethan and Tori as our hero and heroine. Ethan, of course, is at the center of the story, but we get to enjoy Tori’s POV as well. The story begins with Ethan cutting Tori loose without explanation; completely disappearing from her life. At the heart of the Ethan’s seemingly heartless abandonment of Tori is the Phoenix Program. A program in which psychically gifted men with ESP talents perform acts of prevention to halt terrorism via utilizing said talents (with premonitions).

The only problem is that despite knowing the risks as agents, none expected become completely non-existent or to end up on the run. As we come to find out, all agents were given a direct order to trust no one, and assume that Phoenix has been destroyed; that their director Henry Sheppard is dead. Obviously, danger is immanent for Ethan, and for other members of the Phoenix Program. Unfortunately for Ethan, he knows nothing of the other members due to the director requiring that no one loosed their identities.

I will say that I absolutely loved how Lara and Tina set up the secrecy factor of these books. We have not a clue as to how each member is brought together, how the hell they will save themselves, or how they are going to stop their visions of a future massive terrorist attack from occurring. So, without a doubt, we are constantly wondering how each of these stories weaves together and how they are going to end with our much wanted happily-ever-after. I can say that I loved Ethan for his ability to be honest no matter the circumstances. Furthermore, his gracious acceptance of his love for Tori was enchanting. Despite not experiencing any relationships throughout his childhood, or young adult life, and suffering abuse, he was able to be completely vulnerable and giving.

As for Tori, I loved that she never truly had reservations regarding her feelings for Ethan. Even when she first ran into him years post-disappearance, she never gave up on him. I see many female characters waffle between their feelings for the man they claim to be falling for, or believe they have already fallen in love with. I also see them as unsure of themselves at times, or always on the defensive about whether or not they can truly trust this man with their soul. Tori never did such a thing. Sure, she was wary and suspicious of Ethan, understandably, but she never doubted his moral values or qualities. Not to mention that she was such a brave woman with vinegar in her veins.

These two have great chemistry, and they stood by each other without provocation. After Ethan and Tori are discovered by an assassin, they embark on a journey to stay alive until Ethan is up to the task of killing the perpetrator. In the midst of their journey, Ethan learns to forgive his past, and accept his future while saving his own ass, and the woman he loves from death. Furthermore, he comes to the conclusion that after being on the run for years; he must find the other members of the Phoenix. Not only must he stop those who wish to kill him, but he must put the pieces of his nightmarish vision together to stop the final act of terror from coming to pass. Even better, he will find a way to keep Tori in his life, and by his side through the entire ride (happy dance)! Ultimately, this novella was amazing, and I could not wait to get to the second part Run.

Run by Tina Folsom

Now, if I thought I loved Cut, let me tell you that I was genuinely surprised to love Run even more! With that said, I only enjoyed this novella better simply because I wanted to claim Scott as mine more than Ethan (no joke). So, that can clearly be written off as a personal preference, and others may not feel the same. Of course, I am still going to explain why! Well, he is not the uber intelligent teacher with a naughty side like Ethan; Scott is just simply the bad boy in general! He is the mechanic; the greaser; the dark-haired mystery; and the ridiculously handsome I-know-more-than-you-so-don’t-challenge-me guy. Yes, indeed, I like those guys, and well, I am sure many ladies know what I mean! Okay, seriously though, Scott projects more of the tough guy image, and it appealed to me. With that said, when he becomes enamored by Phoebe and falls for her, he is the perfect man of your dreams.

Then, we throw in the danger, which is more intense in this book than the last. Naturally, the suspense builds further because it’s a continuance of the first novella (should go without explanation). This is why I feel compelled to mention my awe at how Lara and Tina brought both stories together, as well as brought Ethan with Tori into Scott and Phoebe’s dilemma. Initially, Scott is in hiding just as Ethan was. Then, because he is truly a good man with a conscience, he finds it necessary to save several children (and Phoebe) from being killed in a crash as he envisioned. Alas, using his powers brings him into focus to the public, thus causing him to be targeted by whoever is after the members of the Phoenix Program.

Phoebe, as a reporter needs to secure her job, and Scott is an undisclosed hero who disappeared from the scene. In her quest to find him and write her story, she finds herself falling for Scott after becoming a target unwillingly for the enemy. Now, the two are on the run, while Scott puts a plan in motion to decipher the vision that haunts him, and meet his nemesis head on. To turn an intense situation into a more hellish one, Scott finds his other half in Phoebe. So, when he sees her potential loss of life in the future he needs to protect her, while saving himself.

Despite so many questions without answers, Ethan was lucky enough to find Scott. With the two of them teaming up, and their women possibly by their side, how can they not win? I’ll say that the build-ups are absolutely great in this story. More importantly, they aren’t so over-the-top that we won’t be salivating for the grand finale when the final novels reach our outstretched hands. Furthermore, even the men had great chemistry. Maybe it is just me, but I like it when there is a bond formed between the heroes of the book, and you actually enjoy their interactions. So, hell yes for that!

Additionally, Scott and Phoebe are great for each other. After just a short time with Scott, Phoebe was able to completely forget about her story, her job, or the life she left behind because all she wanted was him. Furthermore, she was able to embrace Scott for who he was without hesitation. I can say that I liked Tori better than Phoebe though, mostly because she was more decisive and sure of herself. However, both women were tough, and ultimately gave all of themselves to their men.

Even better, they all worked together competently and efficiently; a real team with trust and friendship. After Ethan and Scott decide to find the other members together, and realize that they each hold a key to stopping the future cataclysmic disaster, we know the story is only going to get better. Best of all, each novella truly focuses only on the main characters and the battles they face. Whether the battles fought were personal, internal, or in connection with the mission at hand, the interactions and outcomes were outstanding. I cannot wait for what happens next!

Overall

Both stories were wonderfully written and executed well. I gave both five stars because I absolutely loved them both. I like Tori better than Phoebe because she seemed like a stronger female character to me. I liked Scott better than Ethan though, because I just enjoyed his personality better. Both plots were suspenseful in their own right, and each novella provided mystery. Furthermore, I enjoyed the conclusion to each. There were different aspects I liked better from each book. I thought there was more emotion between Ethan and his familial experiences growing up, but Scott was more fun to see grow as an individual. Therefore, despite the differences, I loved both equally. This is why I gave both a five star rating, especially since one must understand that each reader may likely have a different view than I, because every individual has their preferences. Thank you to Lara and Tina for these two fabulous stories!

ARC Review: Tempted by Midnight by Lara Adrian

When I first found out that the lovely Lara Adrian was going to be a part of the 1001 Dark Night’s Series, I was flat-out stoked! Then, I learnt that the main character was going to be the mysterious Lazaro Archer, and I became more like an excited schoolgirl with her first crush, than an adult who simply is addicted to everything Breed. After all, this is the tortured soul, the male breed who lost his entire family (with the exception of Kellan), including his lifelong mate Ellie, more than two decades ago due to the deranged plans of Dragos (the first enemy of the Order). Without a doubt, I was hungry to see how Lazaro not only received redemption from his dark past, but who gave him a chance at another happy ending.

For those who haven’t read the Midnight Breed Series, this is a novella and book number 12.5 in the entire series, to be exact. As for the Breed, well, you will be delighted by the intricate world Lara created as well as how unique her version of vampires are. Simply put, they are an ancient crash-landed species on Earth that we typically would see as vampires. They have different unique ESP talents as well as a penchant for blood, while hiding in the shadows. However, they have souls, they protect the human world, and they can only hybridize with our human counterparts known as Breedmates. Of course, I would recommend reading all of the books prior to this one, but it is not necessary. Naturally, having more background information is always good, but jumping right into this book without reading the first 12 books wouldn’t detract from the wonder of the story itself.

We first met Lazaro Archer in book eight, Taken by Midnight, when he was initially warned about Dragos (the grandson of the Ancient who had been in hiding whilst creating an army of Gen One Assassin’s, and plotting genocide). However, as readers we had no clue what would happen to him, just that Dragos had been killing Gen One’s in an attempt to kill potential threats. No clue did we have, that Dragos would murder every living member of Lazaro’s Darkhaven and every person under his care, with the exception of his grandson Kellan Archer (simply by chance). As one would imagine, Lazaro kept himself at a distance from everyone after such a tragic event. Even twenty-plus years later, he is still alone, and now the general at the Order’s Command Center in Italy.

He is the epitome of brutal inner strength, focus, control, and honor. That is, until Melena comes into the picture. She is the daughter of a GNC member known as Byron Walsh, Lazaro’s friend and a needed figure in Breed and human relations in order to ensure peace. As a meeting is underway between Paolo Turati (the brother of Italy’s newly elected President), and Byron Walsh to further peaceful relations, a deadly plan is in play. The impact of a menacing attack during Lazaro and Melena’s first real verbal interaction and the gathering itself, leaves Melena in shock with many dead. Lazaro is forced to save her life, driven by nobility and the need to protect, while resisting the temptation Melena herself presents.

While Melena is no longer the boyish, stubborn seven year old Lazaro saved from drowning 22 years ago while Byron and his family came to visit, she is still off limits as far as Lazaro is concerned. For the first time in so many years, his desire for a woman is causing him to lose control and confront his past. He is so full of guilt, and pain that I could understand his cowardice. He not only risked betraying his former mate’s memory, but was terrified of loving another woman, only to lose her. As an Order member, let alone the general of one of many command centers, his duty is dangerous; hell, he is danger for that matter.

Because of such facts, I loved being a part of his conflict and his journey in learning that love is a risk worth taking. I hungered in anticipation watching Lazaro’s control crack, and withered in a lovingly awed silence as he slowly softened and his shields began to dissolve.Melena, well, I just laughed and smiled as her fiery personality engulfed everything around her. She is the opposite of Lazaro in many ways. For example, she does not rein in her emotions at all. It does not matter who she is speaking with, or what the topic of conversation is. She throws every piece of information on the table, and strikes fiercely with her feelings exposed for all to see. She has a sharp wit, foul mouth, and never back’s down. Not even from Lazaro, despite his ruthlessness during certain parts of the story. So, to say that Lazaro met his perfect match is an understatement. Furthermore, when we discover where the threat to Melena took root, they made a great team; an honorable, honest team.

To make this story even more amazing, Lara added in Jehan and Savage. Oh my! Jehan, took my breath away with his use of diction and his intelligence (plus, I visualize eyes like the sea and skin with a deep bronze color…and beautiful caramel-brown waves). Then, there is Savage (Sav); surfer boy incarnate with an accent, golden smile, and oh so charming smart-ass remarks with sincerity. I am even more excited to read more about these two, and I hope Lara writes them each their own little happily-ever-after. To say that I was pleased with this book does not even begin to break the surface of how wonderful this novella was. If you haven’t read the Midnight Breed Series, or if you have and are keeping up with the series….it really does not matter, this is a must read!

Audiobook Review: Lord of Vengeance by Lara Adrian, Narrated by Antony Ferguson

Lord of Vengeance was a really enjoyable audiobook. I really enjoyed the plot, characters and the pacing of the story. I have not read Lara Adrian before and I will definitely be adding her to my to-read list.

Gunnar Rutledge, our hero, was a fascinating character. I really loved him and enjoyed watching his evolution. When the story begins Gunnar witnesses his parent’s death. Although he is too young to do anything about it he dedicates his life to vengeance. Gunnar has trained and prepared himself for the moment when he will be able to avenge his parents’ death. The object of his vengeance is Lord De'bussy. By some coincidence he stumbles upon a maiden in need of help that maiden is Rainna, De’Bussy’s daughter. At the time Gunnar does not know this.

Rainna was raised by her father, her mother died when she was still very young. Rainna adores her father and he her. She believes that her father is her hero. She worships him and is often spoiled by him. Rainna’s upbringing is very sheltered and for the most part uninhibited. Her father does not impose any rules or boundaries on her. When she meets Gunnar she feels immediately pulled to him but she soon realizes that Gunnar has one objective and has had one objective all his life-destroy her father. Rainna is very loyal to her father and the people she grew up with. When Gunnar takes her hostage the tension builds not only between Gunnar and Rainna but with De’Bussy as well.

Rainna is a likeable character but she is very naïve when the story begins. Often times she seems almost childlike. Gunnar and Rainna could not be any more different. They childhoods and their drives are opposites but they cannot ignore their pull to one another.

I really loved this story! I loved the characters, the battles the tension and the unraveling of all the secrets that become known throughout the story. Rainna and Gunnar were a fantastic character. They really challenged each other and with a lot of effort they were able to learn to trust each other despite them being enemies. The narrator was also great! I have to confess that his mimicking of Rainna took me some getting used to and I think that maybe a female playing Rainna would have worked better because some moments seemed comical when the narrator plays Rainna’s part. This was such a fantastic story!

ARC Review: Crave the Night by Lara Adrian

As a longtime fan of the fabulous Lara Adrian, I still love how I always manage to fall in love with every story she tells. I have been reading about the Breed since the beginning, and Crave the Night does not disappoint! We have two main characters known as Nathan and Jordana, but as always there are appearances by the Breed males who originally stole our hearts. Of course, I could barely contain how excited I was to read about Nathan. I wanted to experience Nathan’s POV as a hero since I first met him in Deeper than Midnight. At that point, Nathan was just 13 and had been through unbelievable mental and physical abuse.

Whether you’re new to the series or not, it becomes clear that Nathan had an awful upbringing filled with horrific experiences. Furthermore, as a Hunter (a Gen One assassin created for dealing out death and destruction), he was taught to be calculating, unfeeling, and logical without a conscience. This is why one cannot possibly put down this story once begun; there is constant conflict. Of course, the conflict Nathan feels personally is nothing compared to how the story heats up as enemies begin to surface with more destructive, menacing intentions than before. After First Dawn (when humankind discovered the existence of the alien vampires), there was already many changes occurring, then Lara gives us more of the ruthless newer enemy: the Atlantean’s.

In this story, the Atlantean’s are stepping up their game and causing trouble. They are in search of something very special to their Queen and the results are jaw-dropping. Lara smoothly added crazy twists that surprised the hell out of me. There were curveballs I could not have possibly seen coming, which made the shocking aspects of the book fabulous. What’s more is that a lot of the eye-popping (holy crap, did I just read that?!) moments had to do with our hero and heroine. Not only do we get to find out just how damaged Nathan is and why, but there are secrets to unfold about Jordana as well.

Oh, Jordana. I loved her; she became a sex kitten. She likes the kink, but loves Nathan’s sensitive side too and the two of them heat the page up so beautifully. On a more serious note though….Jordana really was a joy to read! She grew in different ways than Nathan by simply coming into her own as an independent woman, which was lovely. I smiled when she began the story as innocent, afraid, and trying to figure out how to grasp what she wants. Jordana needed Nathan to push her; to show her how capable she was; how strong she was. Then, she bloomed into this character that became sexy, in control, and sure of herself; the transformation was perfect.

Additionally, Lara did wonderfully at making it easy to empathize with Nathan. It was as if I were experiencing his pain, confusion, and enduring his personal growth alongside him. The changes to his character were very well written and I delighted in how she brought Nathan’s potential full circle. Well, he is more than amazing actually. He is sinfully dark, dominant, aggressive, and true to his nature. Even better, he is passionate about his duties and his feelings for Jordana. I could not help but love these two! Truly, I am surprised the eroticism of their encounters didn’t set the pages aflame!

As for the other characters of the book, I enjoyed Carys (Sterling Chase’s daughter) as Jordana’s best friend. She was very open and honest with Jordana and she has a heart of gold when it comes to her loved ones. I also cannot wait to read more about the other members: Rafe, Jax, and Eli. Furthermore, it makes me happy seeing all of the original members together in a room, knowing they’re happy (Dante anyone?). However, I must admit that I liked that most of the story completely centered on Nathan and Jordana. There wasn’t too much interference from other characters; this truly was their story.

Moreover, I cannot wait to read the next installment and see the Atlantean’s continuing their fight. I’m excited for more Jordana, as it is clear by the ending that she may be a necessary piece of the puzzle for the coming battle. Not to mention, I am curious about how the sassy, sweet, all-too-trusting Carys comes out of her relationship with the playboy cage-fighting Breed male known as Rune. I could never get enough of this series! Well, here is to Lara, and a much anticipated thirteenth book in the Midnight Breed Series!
