5 Fun Facts about Silence of the Wolf

For each of my stories, I do tons of research. It’s fun for me, and I hope it’s fun for readers as they try to determine which are fact and which are fiction.

I also have been to areas where I set a lot of my stories, and so have some first-hand experience.

So fact: I used to ski in Colorado mainly, but Breckenridge mostly, and Telluride once. So I based the Silver Town ski resort on a conglomeration of the two. I was misdirected to a black diamond expert slope once and there was no other way to go but down it. Steep, steep, steep incline with moguls, snow bumps all the way down it. I’m afraid of heights, which might have something to do with it, but here I am trying to get down that treacherous slope and I’m terrified. I knew how the heroine of Silence of the Wolf, Elizabeth, felt when she was at the top of that slope looking down. I’ve taken lots of spills before, twisted my knees really bad a few times, was left alone in a blizzard on a trail, just all kinds of things. So for me, it was not just online research that I did, but the real thing. I also skied back east—totally icy conditions and vastly different from Colorado. And cold? Man, was it cold. We went to Killington, Vermont and rode the gondola there. Ironically, I was writing about all this snow when I was sitting in the Texas heat in the summer. One of the things I remember as I made my way down that black slope, and truly didn’t kill myself was I skied from one mogul to the next, which was really hard to do as it was all ice between the moguls, and as skiers on the passing ski lift went by, several cheered me. It was great fun, even if I knew I was about to die.

One of the things I had wanted to write was about the she-wolf falling from the sky—an angel without wings. I have seen numerous cases where everyone has survived a small plane crash, and some where only one walks away, or everyone is killed. But I was really surprised at the number of crashes where people survived, but then the next big concern was the cold, and being rescued before hypothermia set in. In one case, only the pilot was badly injured and his son suffered a concussion—it was a case where the heat was so bad, the plane couldn’t get lift off and hit the trees. In another, the pilot’s wife was injured and no one else as they went down into a snow covered mountain. And in that case, the fear was that the storm was so bad, they wouldn’t be airlifted out of there before hypothermia set in. They did make it though. My son flies with the Air Force, so we talked about plane crashes and where you would sit so that you were most likely to survive in a crash. You know how everyone wants to sit up front? Get those nice first class seats? Or somewhere close enough to the front where you can get off first? For a plane crash, you want to sit way in the back. Just saying.

When Elizabeth takes a run in the Palo Duro Canyon, she sees two longhorn steer. They really do exist there. I went to West Texas A & M and lived in Canyon, Texas, Amarillo for a time, and so I’ve been to the canyon. That’s where I had a ghostly experience with my Army ROTC unit. We were camping there and then doing orienteering to practice for a map course at the summer camps the next morning. I heard wild horses running across the land, snorting, whinnying, neighing. I was certain we were going to be trampled. I woke my sister who grumbled at me to go back to sleep. And then the horses moved away and that was the end of them. Wanting to write about the wild mustangs of Palo Duro Canyon for a magazine article later, I started researching about them, and learned that others had heard them in the middle of the night. There are no wild horses running in the canyon. Just the ghosts of Indian ponies that were run off the cliffs so the different tribes that had joined forces against the Cavalry couldn’t ride again. Really a haunting experience and so sad. I didn’t include it in the story, but I did want to write about her going there.

Fact: Werewolves are based on mythology. Coyote, the trickster god, is a Native American myth. So why can’t the two of them be shifters together? Right, and that’s where our heroine comes in. Have you ever wondered why so many cultures all over the world have similar mythologies? Even trials for werewolves? And werewolf hunts? Have you ever wondered if there must be some real basis for them? Well, there is. :-)

Fact: Gray wolves and coyotes don’t get along. Some gray wolves and coyotes mate. Some red wolves mate with coyotes. Some gray wolves mate with red wolves. Gray wolves kill coyotes. I know, sounds contradictory, doesn’t it? But all of it is true.

And so there you have it! All the facts. Well, there are more, but I could write a whole book on it. :-)

So now, if you could sit in first class or sit in the back of the plane with, let’s say, Tom Silver, which would you rather do? And why?

Life For the Silver Pack Just Got Wilder...

Elizabeth Wildwood has been a longer all her life, ostracized because of her "mixed" half-wolf, half-coyote blood. When she ventures into gray wolf territory on a dangerous quest of her own and his thrown together with the sexiest shifter she's ever met she begins to wish for the first time that she could be part of a family.

When this unusual shifter female comes into his pack's territory, it's Tom Silver's job to protect her—if only she would let him.

  1. I'd sit in the back of the plane with Tom, of course, and chat him right up! :-)

Thank you so much for the post and giveaway. I'd love to win this book, so fingers crossed.

  2. I'll be in the back of the plane with Tom (and Lindsey V.) having a good old time!

  3. I'd always sit in the back of the plane with the sexy guy (and Tom Silver definitely meets that qualification!), simply because he's a sexy guy. Otherwise, I'm all for the luxury of first class.

  4. If I'm going to be by the sexy guy I don't think it matter where I sit. But if the plane starts to malfunction and I'm sitting in the front, I'll drag him and myself to the back per your suggestion;)

    1. I end up usually in the middle, sometimes in the back. :) In the old days, the back of the plane was really awful. That's where they allowed smoking and I have never been a smoker.

    1. Did you ever watch Twilight Zone, the Movie? Where the guy is terrified of flying and they are in the middle of a storm? I've been up in the air during some really bad weather, was running out of fuel because we couldn't land in Pensacola because the storms were so bad, so they kept circling the storms and finally had to go to Alabama to refuel and wait out the storm. Missed my son's groom's dinner. But at least my daughter and I were safe. :)

    1. Even the couple of times I sat in first class, because I got bumped, no meals. :( They had glass that you drank out of though instead of plastic cups.

    1. This is perfect for shifting too. Did you read Savage Hunger? They sat way in the back because she couldn't get her shifting under control. But, the problem is the bathroom is back there. :)

    1. I got really lucky on a flight from Nebraska to Texas and was bumped to first class. I had to ask her what the ticket signified since I'm usually like #4 for seating. This one didn't say #1 or 2, or 3, or 4. :) I think it was FC or something. :) I was so shocked. If Tom had been with me, it would have been perfect!
