Interview with Author Kyra Davis and Giveaway

Meet Kyra Davis author of Just One Lie.

Kyra Davis is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Just One Night, Pure Sin and Sophie Katz series as well as So Much For My Happy Ending. Just One Night has been optioned for television by Anonymous, (the producers of True Detective)

Before publishing her first book, Sex, Murder And A Double Latte in 2005 Kyra supported herself and her son as a marketing manager for a sports club and before that was a department manager at Nordstrom’s Savvy department. She studied at The Fashion Institute Of Design and Merchandising and Golden Gate University.

Kyra now lives with her husband (director and screenwriter, Rod Lurie), her teenage son (proud science-geek and Hawaiian-Shirt-aficionado), dog (champion eater and guardian of the backyard…no squirrel will dare set foot in it) and gecko (the gecko doesn’t do much).

First off, can you tell us a bit about you?
I'm a night owl who loves coffee, chocolate and spicy cocktails. I'm head over heels in love with my husband, incredibly proud of my amazing son and cherish my sweet squirrel chasing dog.

Did you always want to be a writer?
I didn't start writing until I was in the middle of my divorce from my first husband. It was a difficult time. I was frustrated, anxious and angry. So I channelled all my violent impulses and wrote a murder mystery in which I killed off a bunch of men. Seriously though, it was while writing that book that I realized I had found a new direction for my life. Writing saved me. That murder mystery ended up being my first published book, Sex, Murder And A Double Latte.

What kind of writer are you? Panster or Plotter?
A little of both. I start by writing a chapter or two so I can get a feel for the characters and the kind of story I want to write. Then I write an outline. When I'm a little over halfway through my manuscript I throw out the outline and let my inner Panster run free. That's my process.

Where do your ideas come from?
The news, social observations, art, my life, you never know where a great idea will come from.

A la Twitter style, can you describe your book (or series) in 140 characters or less.
Just One Lie is a passionate and emotional story about rejection, indulgence and redemption. (I stole a portion of that tagline from the Romantic Times review, don't judge).

What are some of your favorite kinds of stories to read?
I don't know that I have a favorite kind of story. Any book that is truly well written, has nuanced, dynamic characters, good pacing and can make me stop and think while still entertaining me, that's a book I want to read.

Do you have a favorite book and if so what is it?
But there are so many to choose from! It fluctuates between The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice, Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow, The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton, The History of Love by Nicole Krauss...I could go on for a long time. It's always changing.

What are the scenes that are the hardest for you to write? Why?
I don't think there's a particular kind of scene that's hard to write. That changes book to book. But I consistently spend more time (sometimes a month or more) writing and rewriting the first few chapters of every one of my novels. Those chapters set the tone for the whole book, they're the foundation. Plus they will determine if readers will even bother to buy the book. So every page, every word needs to be damn near perfect.

If you could have dinner with any three authors, who would you choose and why?
Because I'm friends with so many wonderful authors who I love dining out with but I'm going to choose authors I don't know personally.
  1. Harper Lee because come on, I HAVE to know the story behind Go Set A Watchman.
  2. Mary Shelley...I'd love to talk to her about Frankenstein which is another favorite of mine.
  3. Jennifer Belle. I love her books and it would be such an honor to pick her brain and get to know her as a person.

Last question, are you working on anything right now?
I have some things going on in Hollywood in connection to Just One Night which was optioned by Anonymous Content (the producers of True Detective). I’m also working on another book but I'm not ready to say much about either project yet. Don't want to jinx myself!

In Just One Lie, Mercy has to decide between two very different men. If you had to choose between a hot, tatted up bad boy or a strong, clean-cut, ambitious man who would you choose?

The long-awaited follow-up novel to the runaway New York Times bestseller Just One Night—which Publishers Weekly gave a starred review and proclaimed, “Davis skillfully creates an uplifting story in which sex is presented both as freedom and as a metaphor for power, and where raw chemistry is the clear winner over bland complacency.”

In the instant international sensation Just One Night, sensible Kasie Fitzgerald unleashed her passions—and found herself—through an explosive affair. In Just One Lie, we meet Kasie’s wild and tortured sister, whose impulsivity and lack of self-control has set off a chain of events that changes her family forever.

Melody Fitzgerald is the opposite of the “perfect” daughter. The lead singer of an indie rock band, she is impulsive and creative, with a rebellious streak that both defines her and becomes her greatest enemy. Her lover, the enticing and unpredictable Ash, shares her free spirit and penchant for trouble. On the face of it, he seems to be her perfect match.

So why is she so drawn to her soft spoken, reliable drummer, Brad Witmer? How can a man who wears polo shirts and reads the financial section of the paper be of any interest to her at all? And why on earth does someone like that appear to be so captivated by her?

Before she knows it, Melody finds herself on a path of self-discovery, passion, and affairs of the heart. But will a dark secret from her past derail it all? Or will its exposure be the very thing that unburdens her heart and allows her to seek a future with the one man who loves her completely?
