Guest Post with Author Lillian Marek and Giveaway

Lillian Marek was born and raised in New York City (the center of the universe). At one time or another she has had most of the interesting but underpaid jobs available to English majors. After a few too many years in journalism, she decided she prefers fiction, where the good guys win and the bad guys get what they deserve.

Fun facts about my characters? That sounds like fun for me. Let’s see now.

1. Lord and Lady Penworth, Lady Elinor’s parents, are the hero and heroine from the first romance I wrote, and I’m still very fond of them. (After all, they say you never forget your first love.) They kept hanging around in my memory, probably because I had such fun writing about them, so finally I couldn’t ignore them any more and had to carry on into the next generation.

2. Norrie—Lady Elinor—actually makes her first appearance in the epilogue to that first book. She’s a tomboy, climbing over the rocks to admire the fish her brother Pip just caught. (It was a mackrel.)

3. Harry is mentioned there too. Pip tells his father that at school Harry was laughing because when Harry had gone home over the vacation, he’d run into his father and his father didn’t even recognize him. That’s when Lord Penworth tells Pip to invite Harry to stay with them on vacations.

4. Elinor and her mother both adore pretty clothes. After all, who doesn’t? That gave me an opportunity to let them go shopping in Paris. They are among Charles Worth’s first customers, before he even set up his own couturier establishment, the House of Worth. When they place their order with him, they are even ahead of the French Empress Eugenie. Eugenie was famous, or maybe notorious, for her love of clothing, and she made Charles Worth’s fortune for him by wearing his gowns all the time.

5. When Harry was off on his travels, one of the places he went was Brazil, where he bought a dozen aquamarines because the color matched Elinor’s eyes. That particular bit of information doesn’t get mentioned in the book, but I’m sure he will give them to her soon. Should he have them set into a necklace for her, or should he let her choose the design herself? Hmm.

6. This is beginning to sound as if my characters spend all their time shopping, and that’s not at all true. Harry and Elinor are truly interested in the places they visit, in the history as well as the present of those places. They have to be interested, because they’re my characters and they’re stuck with my interests.

7. I sent my characters to Italy because I’ve been there several times and I just love it. I wasn’t there in 1856, of course, but there are things that don’t change. There’s a scene in the book where Harry and Elinor have a picnic on a hillside. Well, once when I was in Italy, I spent an afternoon sitting on a hillside, overlooking fields that were a patchwork of different colors depending on what was growing. There were only a few buildings to be seen, and they looked as if they had been there for centuries. I sat there with my notebook, having a wonderful time daydreaming and enjoying the sun. When I needed a place for Harry and Elinor to have their picnic, I loaned them my hillside.

Harry DeVaux, Viscount Tunbury, loves Lady Elinor Tremaine, but is convinced that his past makes him unworthy of her. He agrees to accompany the Tremaine family to Italy to explore Etruscan ruins, even if it chips away at his resolve to stay away from the delightful woman he loves.

Amid the sightseeing and treasure hunting, Elinor comes to realize that she wants far more from Harry than friendship, but when a dangerous discovery leaves them fighting for their lives, it might just be too late...

  3. I love that the parents of the heroine were the main characters in the author's first book. It makes me want to look up that book, too!

  6. I would have to say the Highlands of Scotland. I love historical and paranormal books that involve warriors or Lairds or those brawny Highlanders. While I doubt I'd get to see any as perfect as they are in the books but I would love to see the locke's, the heather and castles etc just to known I stood where these books talking about!

  7. I would love to travel to Peru to see all the Mayan ruins. I've always heard the people were very friendly in addition to the beautiful mountains, rainforests, rivers and coasts.
