Interview with Author Lori Wilde and Giveaway

LORI WILDE is the New York Times bestselling author of more than sixty books. A former RITA finalist, Lori has received the Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award, the Holt Medallion, the Booksellers Best, the National Readers’ Choice, and numerous other honors. She lives in Texas, with her husband and a wide assortment of pets. Lori teaches Romance Writing Secrets via the internet through colleges and universities worldwide at www.ed2g.com.

Places to find Lori:

First off, can you tell us a bit about you?
I skipped my senior year of high school, went to LVN school when I was 17, put myself through RN school. Did that job for 22 years until I was blessed enough to write full time. I’m a former Marathon runner, eager yogini, married to the love of my life, fifth generation Texan, book lover, movie buff, amateur chef, animal lover, Jeep owner.

Did you always want to be a writer?
Yes. From the time I realized real people wrote the books I loved, it’s the only thing I ever wanted. As far back as I can remember anytime I blew out birthday candles, pulled the right side of a wishbone, spied a falling star, threw a coin into a wishing well, I wished for one thing. To be a writer. I KNEW I was born to be a writer, and I was surprised to learn that most people aren’t born with a burning, overriding desire. As a kid, I assumed everyone was like me.

What kind of writer are you? Panster or Plotter?
I’m a plotter. I thought I was a pantser when I first started, but I just didn’t know how to plot. Plotting makes my life so much easier. I don’t end up writing hundred of pages I have to throw away later like I did when I wrote by the seat of my pants.

Where do your ideas come from?
Everywhere. People, towns, activities, TV, movies, magazines, books. The real question isn’t where the ideas come from, but how do you turn the ideas into a story. That’s the hard part.

A la Twitter style, can you describe your book (or series) in 140 characters or less.
Failed NYC ad exec reunites with high school sweetheart, a cowboy mayor, to save her hometown amidst a long-standing family feud & record-breaking drought.

What are some of your favorite kinds of stories to read?
I like stories that swept me away to a time and place out of my ordinary experience—The Poisonwood Bible, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Help—or novels of suspense like the works of Lisa Unger, Lisa Gardner, Michael Connelly.

Do you have a favorite book and if so what is it?
There are so many amazing books, I can’t pick just one.

What are the scenes that are the hardest for you to write?
Sex scenes. It often takes me days to write one.

If you could have dinner with any three authors, who would you choose and why?
  • Mark Twain, my childhood idol. I would ask him about the Mississippi.
  • Michael Lee West, besides being an awesome writer, she’s such a unique person, I’d love to get to know her better.
  • My best friend, Carolyn Greene, who writes for Guideposts and Love Inspired. When it comes to plotting, I’ve never met anyone who loves all the nerdy, noodly aspects of it as much as I do except for Carolyn.

Last question, are you working on anything right now?
I’m always working on something. I’ve started a new series set in East Texas and centering on an antique hope chest that grants heartfelt wishes.

What three writers would you most like to have dinner with?

Cowboys always seem to have the most spectacular butts, probably from all that hard riding in the saddle. But Melody Spencer had long-ago wiped the dust of Cupid, Texas off her cute shoes…and done her best to forget the chiseled jaw, strong arms and those other assets of cowboy Luke Spencer. Their families might be part of a long-time feud, but he was her very first love even if it turned out they never wanted the same things.

But now Luke’s come striding back into her life, tempting her with the memories of long, lazy evenings and hot, passionate kisses. And he has an ulterior motive-as Mayor of Cupid, he knows Melody’s business savvy can help save their beloved hometown. His smooth-talking might get her to Texas, but that doesn’t mean he’ll get her in his bed. Still, people do say love can be more perfect the second time around…

  10. I think the sexiest thing about cowboys are that most seem laid back & down to earth (at least the ones that I have come into contact with when I worked in media/advertising/marketing with the PBR).
